Avoid Being Catfished on Your Gay Cruise

With the popularity of hookup apps and online dating, most people are familiar with the term catfish, have been catfished themselves, know someone who has, or has intentionally (or unintentionally) catfished someone else. In case you have been living under a rock, getting catfished means you have matched with someone and when you meet in person for your hookup or date, the person looks nothing like their pictures. They may have used more flattering photos from years ago or even pictures of someone else entirely. These meetings sometimes make for hilarious stories with friends but it is essential for gay men to avoid being catfished while on a cruise. Here’s why.

Caribbean Police are the Catfish

In many places around the world homosexuality is against the law. Punishments may include fines, prison sentences, and even death. In some Caribbean islands it has been reported that Police Officers use popular dating or gay hookup apps to lure gay men to a meeting spot. Upon arrival the unsuspecting tourist is arrested. More than likely a prison term or death sentence is not the intent in these circumstances but you can never be too careful. Most likely the Officer will be seeking financial compensation. This may be a fine paid to the police department or perhaps a bribe paid directly to the Officer.

Do Your Research

Before you travel outside of your home country, be sure to research the local laws and customs of the countries you intend to visit. Even if you are traveling on a gay cruise, it doesn’t mean the islands you are visiting are gay friendly.

Alternatives to Hookup Apps While Cruising

If you are traveling on a traditional cruise, chances are your cruise line includes an LGBTQ+ meetup at least once during each cruise. This is a great opportunity to meet new people with shared interests. You may decide to hookup with your new friends (in more ways than one) during the duration of your cruise. This a great alternative to hookup apps while cruising especially since most people choose to disconnect from technology while onboard their ship.

If you’re traveling on a gay cruise, a scheduled LGBTQ+ meetup is unnecessary since the entire ship is filled with likeminded individuals. Instead of using a hookup app on shore, meet a new friend and hookup onboard your ship and use shore time for sightseeing and excursions.

Since you will be trading your first introduction from in-app to in-person, try saying “hello” or “my name is…” instead of “looking?” or “got pics?”
